18. Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur
This Lord Shiva temple is located in Thanjavur in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. Popularly known as RajaRajeswara Temple, it is undoubtedly one of the largest temples in India and is an exemplar of the fine Hindu architecture from South India prevalent in the Chola period. Built by Raja Raja I to celebrate a military victory, the temple is over 1,000 years old and is one of the three Great Living Chola Temples. The structure of the temple is made only out of granite. Counted as Hyderabad’s principal landmark and city symbol, this ancient four-column structure was built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 to commemorate the end of the plague.
