About Leh-Ladakh

A perfect place to witness the unmatched beauty of nature, Ladakh, the region of mountain passes, is a piece of broken moon land. With much of it being over 3,000m, Ladakh is the highest plateau of the Indian state of Kashmir. Spread over a vast area, Ladakh is the largest district in India and it lies between 32 to 36 degree north latitude and 75 to 80 degree east longitude. Kargil and Leh are the two districts of Ladakh. Kargil lies at an altitude of 2750m and Leh at 3505m. Leh is the largest town in Ladakh and cannot be missed visiting at all.

Ladakh was a part of the Kushana Empire around the first century. In the 2nd century, Buddhism came to western Ladakh via Kashmir. Majority of the people here practice Buddhism. The Buddhists Gompas (Monasteries) are the most attractive features of this land. Located in the vicinity of villages and providing the focus for the faith of Buddhists, the Gompas are situated on the highest points of the mountain spurs. Gompas have a wreath of artefacts and have such a calming effect on mankind.
