The golden temple is known as Harmandir Sahib or abode of god. The temple was built by a succession of people over the years beginning with Guru Arjan. He was the one who took the initiative to build a temple at this place. The Sikh religion was being given its final touches before it begins a religion with many followers. It was during the dawn of 16th century AD that an idea struck the guru that a temple should be made with a tank or Sarovar in the campus. The 1st Harmandir Sahib was constructed in 1604 by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru. He was the one who symbolically was placed on the lower level, unlike Hindu temples which are built on a higher level. The idea behind mandir being built on a lower level was that even the humblest of the members of society had to bend his head and then to enter it. It was decided that unlike the one Hindu temple it should have four entrances instead of one. So, he included entrances on 4 sides, pointing it that it was open to everyone of every caste and creed. The guru was open-minded and big-hearted and so the foundation tablet was laid by Mian Mīr who was an Islamic divine of Lahore (currently, Pakistan). The invaders were eying the temple with greed because the temple had precious gold and other valuable things adorning it. That is why the temple was dismantled many times by the Afghan invaders and was then reconstructed. It was reconstructed in marble and copper adorned with gold foil. It was executed during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1801–39). Now the structure was popularly called the Golden temple and thus became known all over. Sikhs from all over the world make a trip of this place as an ultimate pilgrimage. There are hotels in Amritsar Railway station Amritsar.
