It may get quite hectic in certain parts of Ooty, but when tourists leave the town and make their way to the quieter areas, they experience serenity. The greener areas are dotted with tall pine and English-like country lanes.

Ooty - Places to Visit

‘The Queen of Hill Stations’ is a mix of Indian chaos, garden, beautiful parks and Hindu temples. One can also come across Raj-era bungalows, which can also serve as temporary homes during a vacation. The British established the town in the 19th century. Ooty served as the summer capital of the Madras government. Despite modern add-on, the hill town still manages to retain the old-world charm it was always known for. The journey by the miniature train offers travellers a front-row seat to spectacular scenery. To the west of Ooty's racecourse, one can find the train station and bus stand. Tourists will love the Thread Garden if they appreciate irony and kitsch art. The works of art created by hand-wound thread is quite a sight to behold. The technique was mastered by Anthony Joseph, from Kerala, and about 50 craftspeople. It took them about 12 years to complete. The Nilgiri Museum has decent exhibits on the Nilgiri and Andaman tribal groups. It is also home to stuffed local wildlife. The artefact collection is quite impressive. One might even get the chance to hold a Stone Age bow. The museum is located just a little away from the village of Muthorai Palada (M Palada), which is about 11 km to the south of Ooty and on the way to Emerald. The Nilgiris Library was set up in 1848. The gardens serve as a living gallery of the natural flora present in the Nilgiris. Keep an eye out for the fossilised tree trunk, which is said to be 20 million years old. A visit to Ooty is not confined to a single season. The summer months from March to June are quite pleasant and are the peak tourist months, too. The summer months are perfect for sightseeing and other fun activities. Avoid going to Ooty during the monsoons as it can get quite wet and misty.
