Know more about Place
Gwalior is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The local lore suggests the story of Gwalior sage Suraj Sen, a local prince, who got lost in the forest. On a secluded hill, he met an old man, the sage Gwalipa who he requested some drinking water from. He was then led to a river whose waters not only quenched his thirst but also healed him of leprosy. Overcome with gratitude, the prince wished to return the gesture, and the sage asked him to build a wall on the hill to protect the other sages from wild animals that disrupted their pujas. The prince built a palace inside the fort which was named "Gwalior" after the sage, and the city that sprawled around the fort was called the same. This interesting trivia enriches the flavor of the city, which is an eclectic mixture of history and royalty. Today, it is also a busy city with several commercial and residential localities, Govindpuri being one of them. Some of the main places worth visiting around Govindpuri are-
Gwalior Fort: The possession of the fort has passed through many hands, from Tomars to the Mughals, to the Marathas and eventually coming under the control of the British. Built atop a rocky, long, narrow outcrop of Vindhyan sandstone, the fort rises up to 300 feet. It features inscriptions that date back to the 6th century.
