Hotels in Diveagar for a Delightful Stay
Imagine a secluded beach 170 km from Mumbai with fishing settlements, temples, villages, and cheery locals engaged in coconut and betel nut tree farming. A beach living in relative obscurity until 1997, when a woman from the village discovered a copper trunk containing a gold Ganesha mask and a few ornaments while working in a garden. The idol was deified and instated in the temple. And almost overnight, Diveagar was on the news and firmly on the tourist map! The mask was stolen in 2012, but the Diveagar beach had by then, left a lasting impression in its own right. Mask or no mask, its pristine beauty was here to stay!
Diveagar is a prosperous village that, along with Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar, make up the Raigad trio of beaches. Ruled by the Shilahar Dynasty from 800 A.D to 1265 A.D, the village contains settlements that are over 500 years old. Due to its strategic location, the village has fought off countless invasions by the Arabs, the Portuguese, and the Mughals.
Take a stroll on the beach, watching carefully for sand-bubble crabs who scurry across frequently. Savor fantastic Konkani cuisine, the delicious sea breeze, and uninterrupted views of the coast! Hop over to nearby Harihareshwar beach and you might be lucky enough to spot dolphins. Some sea turtles still make their arduous journey across the sea to lay their eggs on this beach. With numerous ferries operating in the area for both people and four-wheelers, Diveagar is a wonderful base to embark on explorations of the Konkan coast.
A 15-minute drive from Diveagar gets you to Dighi and the famous Murud Janjira - a grand sea fortress that has never seen defeat! Repeated attempts were made by the Portuguese, the British, the Marathas, but the fort always held its ground. Built in the middle of the sea in the 15th Century, on an oval-shaped rock with 19 rounded bastions and Ashok Chakras inscribed all along the gates, it is considered one of the strongest sea forts in the country.
Visit the Rupnarayan temple on your way to the Diveagar beach. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, with an idol beautifully carved in black sangamravar rock. Drop by the Peshwa memorial located in the heart of the town. Peshwa Balaji Vishwanath was born here in 1660. In front lies a statue of a standing Balaji Vishwanath in complete Maratha regalia with a sword in his hand.
