5 THINGS TO DO IN LADAKH

It won’t be wrong to say that Ladakh is one of the most mesmerising places on earth. Right from the high mountains to the steep valleys and from the raging rivers to the frozen lakes, Ladakh is a land of surprises. Amidst the surroundings that seem alien to the concept of green vegetation, the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere is both exciting as well as bone-chilling. But you need not worry, as we bring you a list of the top 5 things to do in Ladakh. Take a look!

1) Tap to the beats of Ladakhi masked dancers during the Hemis Festival

Hemis Gompa is the biggest monastery in Ladakh. Courtyard of this otherwise silent and peaceful monastery becomes an open-air theatre and buzzes with the sounds of cymbals, drums and gigantic windpipes during the Hemis festival. This festival is celebrated to venerate the birth of Guru Rinpoche who was the founder of Buddhism in the region. The lamas perform the mystical ‘chaam dance’ wearing colourful attire and masks that depict varied emotions. The festival is celebrated for two days. Once every twelve years (in the Tibetan year of monkey), the bejewelled ‘thangka’ of Guru Rinpoche is unfurled during the festival. The experience of these two days is a memory to be cherished for a lifetime.

2) Meet Drokpas—The lost descendants of Alexander at Dha and Hanu

Drokpa community of Ladakh is considered to be of the Aryan lineage. There are five villages of this community in Leh; out of which only two villages, Dha and Hanu are open to tourists. It is said that the forefathers of the inhabitants of these villages came to India with Alexander and settled in this valley. Their distinctive Indo-Aryan physical features and also the cultural and religious practices are different from those of the surrounding Ladakhi people. When you meet these people, the first thing that catches your attention is the elaborate headdress of Drokpa women which is made from fresh flowers. It is commendable that after all the years of their immigration, they have still upheld their cultural identity.

3) Admire rare paintings in Alchi Monastery—one of the world’s oldest monastery

Alchi Monastery was built in the 10th century. There is a very identifiable Indian touch in the frescos and murals of this monastery as artists from the Kashmir valley were employed for the construction. The exquisitely painted ‘Green Tara’ and ‘Wheel of Life’ are surprisingly well preserved even after so many centuries. The oldest temple in the monastery, Dukhang has an elaborate wooden gateway with tiny Bodhisattvas. It is an interesting monument for archaeologists as well as tourists.

4) Experience the nomadic lifestyle of Changpas at Rupshu

At an elevation of around 4200m, Rupshu region is a part of the Changthang high-altitude plateau that extends from southeastern Ladakh to northern Tibet. The nomadic Changpa tribe roams in this exotic land of giant peaks, placid lakes and verdant meadows. These are hardy people with very few earthly possessions such as their yak wool tent called ‘rebu.’ Even their livestock does not constitute more than pashmina goats. With rich cultural and religious traditions, these people still retain their unique primordial qualities. You can camp under the starry sky alongside the Changpa tents and peek inside their pastoral life.

5) Admire the ‘perak’ headdress in Stok Palace

Built in the early 1800s, Stok Palace is 17 km away from Leh. It comprises of a museum that houses a huge collection of thangkas, old weapons, coins, seals, antique items (used in the religious rituals) and royal ornaments. In the entire collection, the main objects of attraction are the ‘peraks’ or the queen’s headdresses studded with turquoise, emerald and other semi-precious stones. The queen still uses some of these ornaments during various ceremonies. As this palace is still being used by the royal family of Leh, only a portion of it is open to the general public. A visit to Stok Palace gives the feel of the regal lifestyle of Ladakh.

With all these things to do, Ladakh is sure to give you memories of a lifetime.

Offbeat destinations in South Goa that captivated me

Offbeat destinations in South Goa that captivated me

Yes, South Goa seems a particularly unusual choice as my friends commented, considering someone who’s a bonafide party animal like me! Yet, I went ahead with it since I wanted a break from all the madness of my hectic professional and social lives and most importantly, I had a whole month to chill before getting back to another work desk!

Goa seemed the perfect choice for taking in some of the most unusual and charming sights with a couple of pals for company and of course, enjoying the warm hospitality and simply lazing around with no constructive purpose always. While most of you would be eager to explore the hippiest landmarks in Goa, South Goa has something special to offer and I definitely took the road less travelled on my trip (been there done that earlier if you take Baga, Anjuna and other places into account).

I decided to book myself a room anywhere reasonable and attractive in South Goa (a tall order you ask?). OYO Rooms helped me find a comfortable hotel that offered a lovely room, great view and all necessary amenities. While booking my hotel online, I was delighted to know that I could book the room at half price as part of a special OYO offer in Goa which meant a fuller wallet! OYO promised to help me enjoy my vacations at half price and the trip started off on a hugely positive note as a result. I stayed at OYO flagship 15006, beautiful property with a swimming pool and closer to beach.

Now to some of the most offbeat destinations in South Goa that left me spellbound-

Sal Estuary Hotel near Sal EstuaryI was literally watching my inner artist come alive at the sheer sight of the Sal Estuary that is beautifully located between the Betul and Cavelossim beaches. This is one of the best possible retreats that you can experience along the River Sal’s coast. I took a long and breezy walk along the Cavelossim beach with Father Time content to let me indulge for once! While at the Betul beach, saw some people fishing with the local folks as well. All in all, a nice experience.

Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary

Now I have always been fascinated by nature and to get a chance to experience it up close again was hard to pass up! I took off to the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary that is situated at the Sanguem Taluka. The lovely mountains and flora and fauna here did not fail to leave me awestruck and going through the dense forests is in itself a thrilling yet soul-stirring experience.

Betul Lighthouse

Hotels near Betul Lighthouse

Another gem that I discovered in South Goa was the Betul Light House. For those wondering how to get there, it is just 20 kilometres away from Madgaon. The lighthouse is straight out of an Enid Blyton novel! The lighthouse is an amazing subject if you’re into photography like I am and is located on a hill, looking out onto the resplendent coast. Walking till this light house literally made my day!

Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Hotels near Dudhsagar

I was absolutely delighted with my trip to the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. You have to go to the bank of the Mandovi River which is around 60 kilometres away from Panjim. I later learnt that this is one of the country’s tallest waterfalls. I got lost in a whole new world after visiting this landmark. I went with my buddies and we had a nice time sitting on the rocks and chatting here.

Butterfly Beach

Hotels near Butterfly Beach

I had heard of the Butterfly Beach previously and my curiosity was stoked immensely prior to the actual visit. I took the boat and boy was it a lovely ride! There is trek trail to this beach from Margao which takes approximately 2 hours but I’d had a heavy breakfast and my stomach disagreed with the idea! The beach is absolutely gorgeous- no two ways about it! And of course, I could definitely see some amazing butterflies as well. This was another destination straight out of a picture postcard with the sea urchins and crabs during low tide. I also heard that dolphins can be viewed here often and they also do their famous acrobats.

Check out for best time to visit Goa

We stayed till sunset on Butterfly Beach, internally reluctant to take the ride back. After all, I was basking in the indelible beauty and natural splendour that South Goa has to offer. I’m sure you will love these offbeat destinations as much as I did!

Why I think North Goa Absolutely Rocks

Yes, I’ve been to Goa countless times over my rather short life till now and I’ve extensively covered all the touristy things that most of you already know, both in North and South Goa. However, now when I visit Goa, it is North Goa that I incline more towards. I think North Goa absolutely rocks and I understood even more on a recent trip when it started off amazingly! OYO Rooms helped me book a room online at half price (even the wallet likes it!). After getting a chance to enjoy my vacation at half price, I dived straight into my favorite things to do in North Goa.

Here’s why North Goa absolutely rocks-

Keri/Querim Beach touched my soul

OYO Rooms near beach in Goa

I had an epiphany on the somewhat secluded and pristine Keri/Querim Beach. Why, you may ask, did I choose this beach? Well, I’ve been to Calangute, Candolim, Baga, et al. These are popular but hugely crowded beaches that I no longer love that much. This beach brought me closer to the real soul of Goa and so was the wonderful drive to Keri from Arambol. We clicked several pictures along the beautiful route which is a must-try for anyone coming here! I loved the Ajoba temple at the entrance to Keri Beach. There is a running mystery about a tunnel through the cliffs which traverses to the other side but we didn’t find it! The icing on the cake was the ferry ride to the Fort Tiracol/Terekhol which has views to die for!

Morjim Beach ensured total relaxation!

This is North Goa’s cleanest beach. I testify to the fact! The triangular beach has waves coming neatly at you from two different ways. Kite surfing is popular on this beach and I just love the dedicated nesting zone for Olive Riddley turtles! I enjoyed swimming here and walking through the Siolem village that is straight out of a novel with its greenery and lip-smacking fish curry sold at local restaurants.

Fort Aguada is where I got my mojo back

OYO near Fort Aguada

Looking for a spot that inspires confidence, awe and wonder? Fort Aguada is North Goa’s crown jewel for sure! I enjoyed my visit immensely and the lighthouse view is something else indeed! I did not have to shell out any entry fee for sampling the incredible view that I simply cannot describe in a few words!

I tried my luck (without luck!) at the casinos!

Casino in Goa

If, like me, you’re the sort who will enjoy a casual game of poker or teen patti, North Goa has some of the best casinos available. Truly, this is India’s Las Vegas and I tried my luck unsuccessfully at the Casino Palm on the Calangute Beach. Yes, I didn’t win much but the experience was out of the world. Some of my friends visited MV Caravela as I heard and I’ve put it on my to-do list for the next Goa jaunt. This is an offshore casino on the Mandovi Beach where you can savour the evening cruise with tempting food and gamble at the same time.

I shopped like crazy at North Goa

North Goa shopping places

North Goa is for those shoppers (like me) who enjoy quaint and charming things. The Anjuna Market, was of course, a big attraction for me since I picked up a charming beach shirt and other apparel at dirt cheap prices! I loved going to the Mapusa Market to pick up some fish and meat for a bout of experimental cooking along with some more clothes (we can never really have enough can we?). In fact, if you’re on the lookout for really affordable wine, you’ll get it here! Bicholim is where I interacted with some really skilled potters and picked up a few of their exquisite creations for my friends and family members.

The Grande Island Tour was magnificent

Great Island tour Goa

Adventure junkies should certainly go on the Grande Island trip! I got picked up from Panjim and went on the boat ride. All necessary safety equipment is available and the actual trip starts from Dona Paula’s Hawai Beach. While sipping on my soft drink and munching on delectable nibbles, I kept looking out for dolphins and nearly spilled my drink overboard when I did see them! After all that excitement, I went snorkeling near Grande Island and it was also a superb experience. The Hansa Beach was another treat where I lazed around for a bit and then we group tourists played a game of football to whet our appetite for the sumptuous lunch that followed.

15 Awesome Ideas for Wedding Couple Photography

Weddings are a once in a lifetime deal, well at least that’s the plan for the most. The special moments must be captured and framed so that when you cannot visualise the beautiful memories anymore, you can relive your wedding day through these pictures. The most important part of any wedding is obviously the bride and the groom. These wedding photographs will help you capture the essence of your wedding day..

Essentials

Before moving on here are some prerequisites:

 • Relaxed and Confident Bride and Groom: The disposition of the subjects is the most crucial thing. You cannot fake happiness. Even if the couple is happy generally, the wedding day adds pressure. The couple should be stress-free.
 • Makeup: Of course the bride and groom will look their best on their wedding day, but a makeup artist should be present for touch-ups before every photograph.
 • Professional Photographer: A professional camera is essential. You can hire a reputed photographer or assign the task to a skilled friend or relative whom you can rely.
 • The List of Poses: You should have the list of the idea of poses ready so that the photographer can catch you at the right time for each pose throughout your wedding day.
 • The Planning: The lights, dress, makeup, position, props, everything should be on point and ready before the moment so that it doesn’t pass before a good picture is taken.
 • Cooperation of people: There will be hundreds of guests so the task could get a little tricky for the bride, groom, and photographer. People must cooperate and give the space, and be present to be in the frame when needed.

Once all these prerequisites are arranged, you can get started. If you need help with ideas for the Indian wedding poses, here are some.

 1. Haldi

The Haldi ceremony is an ominous and indispensable ceremony. It must be captured on camera. The turmeric smeared smiling bride and the playing Haldi with friends, these types of poses are classic and joyful too. Make sure your wedding album has photographs of both, the bride and the groom smeared with Haldi.

 1. Entry

The innovative entry ideas for brides and the groom are a big deal in every wedding. With the trend of the bridal entry getting more popular, you just cannot afford to miss capturing the bridal entry on camera. Don’t forget the groom either. Plan it out well and pose for the cameras. You never know, maybe a simple smartphone picture can turn out better than the professional ones. The magic of candid poses!

 1. Mehendi and Jewellery

It takes hours of patience and backache to get the Mehendi right. Let it last for more than just a few weeks. Let it last forever. Get close-up shots of just the Mehendi of your hands, of your feet and both together.

4.Getting Ready

Never miss this classic pose. It takes time to get ready. The bride is already under pressure to be there in time after all the makeup and hairstyling and jewellery. The emotional moments between the bride’s siblings and parents often take place during this time. Don’t miss out on any of it. Let the wedding album be the witness of what was going on backstage, the emotions, the preparations, everything.

 1. Sky Lanterns

It has become a trend to have sky lanterns or fireworks or both, during a wedding. This moment is a must capture. Have the bride and groom in focus with the sky lanterns or fireworks in the background. The terrace is a good place to get this frame right. Have a few photos focusing on the fireworks with the bride and groom looking at them, or at each other, unaware of the camera.

 1. Balloons

If it is a daytime wedding, the sky lanterns and fireworks become balloons and colour bombs. Nothing screams joy like balloons and colour bombs. Time them right to capture the dazzling smiles and love-struck eyes of the bride and groom in front of a colourful and playful background.

 1. Black and White Portrait

Take a few black and white portraits of the bride getting ready and of the groom candidly having a moment with his best friend. Bride looking at her father, mother, siblings, or cousins are must capture shots. Capture all the meaningful memories and also take time, so that the photographer can take a few clicks in the black and white mode. Edits work if there was no time for it. But the light and exposure come out best if the black and white picture is taken that way. Black and white pictures add a nostalgic feeling to your wedding album. You must have them.

 1. Bride meets Groom

This moment is always special at a wedding no matter how many times the bride and groom have met each other before. The coy and happy gleam in the eyes of the bride and the groom is too precious to let go in a matter of moments. Capture the smiles, capture the shy blinks, capture their hearts in the photos and put them in the wedding album treasure.

 1. Phere

This is a classic Indian wedding scene. With a professional camera and the right timing, you can make it look like something straight out of a Bollywood tale. Take as many pictures as possible and stop shortly for them.

 1. Vermilion

This is another classic pose. The photographer must be ready to capture the moment and the groom should smear the first ever touch of vermilion in slow motion so the picture comes out perfect. The bride should proudly flaunt this picture in her wedding album and decide for herself if she wants to wear vermilion every day after marriage or not. But on the wedding day, the vermilion is there to grab all the attention.

 1. Romantic Silhouette

Capture some silhouettes in the sunset or in the bright lights of the wedding hall. This picture must have only the bride and the groom in the frame. This one could be the perfect last picture in the wedding album.

 1. The Coy Bride/Groom

This picture can be taken at any moment, before the wedding, during, or after. It should look candid. The coy bride is a classic. But the coy groom is more adorable. So capture the shy moments of the bride and the groom to put in the wedding album. If the bride and groom are not the shy types, have people embarrass them till they blush.

 1. Twirl

The classic twirl of the lehenga is a happy picture to have. The wide smile of the bride or her oozing confidence, whatever she chooses to portray in her lehenga twirl picture. It is best taken from the balcony of the floor above, as the bride twirls looking up and everybody stares at her in adoration from a distance.

 1. Best Friends

The groom with his best friends and the bride with hers, together in a single frame. Make funny poses and take lots of pictures. Imagine the nostalgia 10 years from the wedding day. Now imagine looking at these pictures with wrinkly hands. Nothing can be more precious.

15.Bye Bye

This one again is a must for the wedding album. This could go with the romantic silhouette on the last page or on the cover of the album. It can be shot with the bride and the groom looking back from their car, or waving back while walking away as the onlookers wave out of focus.

These beautiful Indian wedding couple photography ideas must make your wedding album a beautiful treasure. Happy wedding and Happy Memories.

You don’t want to be that bride, do you?

Don’t miss out

Mehendi is an indispensable element at a wedding, unlike sangeet ceremony. It signifies the strength and purity of the bond that is going to be made. One wonders why the groom too not wears mehendi then! After all, he is the person the bride is bonded with. But imagine the appearance of a beautiful mehendi design on rough, hairy hands. Why are we even thinking about it! Some latest mehendi designs can still be tried on a groom though. But primarily, the bride holds the significance of the day way more than the groom. Both her hands and also her feet can be adorned with beautiful mehendi designs for bride. The future of their marriage is signified in those beautiful hands. Don’t miss out on the options to choose your favourite. A mehendi design might not look too conspicuous under all that jewellery but the keen eyes will definitely notice it all.

Ideas for Bridal Mehendi Designs

If you are looking for the latest bridal mehendi design, you will find all the options with a good bridal mehendi artist. But you could also get a talented friend to pull off a doodle just for you. It is your wedding, it is your mehendi. You should get to choose how you want it. You can get the design from a tattoo artist as well. They have a number of mehendi designs for a bride. You can also have your bridal mehendi customized. You could add in elements you want to and the artists will incorporate those elements in a beautiful design. So, the options are plenty. Here are some ideas that are latest and unique or popular and classics.

King and Queen

The two hands of the bride can have two different but symmetrical designs. There can be a frame of the intrinsic artwork with the face of a queen on one hand and that of a king on the other. When she puts her hands together with the palms stretched out, it can be a beautiful frame together.

This design idea signifies the intimacy of the bond. It also signifies that the fate of the marriage is in the hands of the bride. Which bride wouldn’t want to get behind that idea? Or the two hands can signify equal responsibility of the two people to be bound in holy matrimony.

Asymmetrical Designs

If you are not being able to make up your mind about a design, it is understandable. It is an important decision. What if you like two similar designs a lot and cannot understand which one will be a better choice? Family and friends often confuse more than help in these situations. Too many people, too many opinions. So, the best solution in this situation is, ‘Why not both’? You can totally get two different designs on two hands. The artist will make it look good. There will be some points of symmetry but the details will be asymmetrical. So you get twice the compliments and twice the attention for the two different designs.

Best Foot Forward

Don’t forget a little something for that beautiful pedicure. Why go through all that trouble? Just to wear some painful new shoes? Adorn your feet with some beautiful mehendi designs so that when you walk or twirl and the feet play peek-a-boo under your beautiful bridal outfit, keen watchers are curious to find out what the entire design looks like. There will be plenty of time to actually see the design in the coming days as well. So, you get to choose a design for your feet. Go for the minimalistic mandalas or full checkers or jaali. It is your choice.

Full Hands

The days of having the bride covered up in jewellery are gone. Of course, the economy is a reason. But even a Richie rich bride won’t want to look like a clown. However, the arms cannot go all bare either. It is her wedding day! And the designer blouse or choli has to end at the upper arm. So, full hands mehendi is the trick. It is easy for the bride as there is no extra weight to carry. She gets to flaunt a beautifully elaborate design. Also, her hands look beautiful with the colour of mehendi. Win Win!

Glitter and Sequins

An elaborate design might look boring and cluttered. A simple design might look too minimalistic. Glitters and sequins make it alright! Mehendi without sequins and glitter is for the guests. The bride has to be extra. This is the right way to strike the balance between the necessary extra and yet classy beauty.

Colours

Thank heavens for coloured mehendi. You can match your outfit with a perfect contrast. You can also match the groom’s outfit so you both look perfectly made for each other. Colours add details to a mehendi design like nothing else can. Also, for full hand designs, colours are a must. Don’t go overboard though. It is still a mehendi and not Holi. Just add the ideal amount of colours to the mehendi to make it look absolutely gorgeous.

Anklets and Bangles

To add to the illusion of more jewellery or to go with the actual jewellery, anklets and bangles out of mehendi is a perfect idea. You will not be wearing the jewellery after the mehendi and the wedding is over. But you will get to wear these for weeks and the wonderful feeling of being a new bride will stay with you for more than just a few busily ceremonious days.

Mandala

The mandala design is for people who want to keep it simple and classic. Maybe you don’t like heavy jewellery, makeup, or even mehendi. Then this is for you. Have a medium or large sized mandala at the centre of the palms and feet and some designs at the wrists, ankles, fingers and toes. Make a chandelier like the connection from the fingers. It will be the most classic look and you can proudly flaunt it at your office too. It is simple and chic.

Peacock

The peacock is the symbol of heritage, culture, and vigour. You can flaunt the heritage at the mehendi ceremony and wedding while summoning the vigour for your marriage. The elegant charm of a peacock design is unbeatable, especially when teamed with blue and yellow details.

Floral Patterns

If you love floral patterns, don’t shy away from wearing them. Yes, many people find them boring and cliché and so outdated. But they are just the opinions of people who have different tastes. If floral patterns are a must for you, go ahead and have it. They look beautiful. Choose the best floral pattern, with intrinsic small floral designs with some mesh or chandelier details and people will keep staring at your hands admiring the design! These were some ideas for mehendi designs for bride. You can also get the artist to incorporate elements signifying your love into the designs so only the bride and groom know the complete story behind the idea. Artists who are good with latest bridal mehendi designs will surely understand what you want. They will beautifully incorporate the personalized elements and symbols in the design. It is a good idea, isn’t it?

Choose your classic or latest bridal mehendi design with patience. Browse through all your options and think about customizing them as well. If you have started the search well in time, you will surely find what you are looking for.
