Run by the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Dunstable Hospital provides quality medical care to over 400,000 people. It also acts as a landmark for visitors to Luton and some of the most popular places around the Hospital are
Stockwood Discovery Centre- One of its most prominent attractions is the Mossman Collection. This impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles is called the Life’s Journey Gallery. This is the largest exhibit of its kind in Europe and features 54 vehicles of George Mossman, a local businessman, and an additional nine that were added by the Luton Museum. Here, you will find the Charabanc, a carriage employed for public transportation before motorised cars.
St. Mary’s Church- The largest church in Bedfordshire, St. Mary’s is almost 850 years old. It is mostly visited for the flint and stone chequer patterns that adorn the exterior walls of the church. The majority of its architectural elements are in the Gothic style from the 15th century. The main contributor to the restoration project of the church, John Wenlock, is represented on one of the stained windows. You will also come across the tomb of his father, William Wenlock. Designs like a 14th-century octagonal canopy are a nod to the church's Gothic architectural inspiration.
Barton Hills National Nature Reserve- The countryside of Luton, around the Chilterns’ northeastern hills, has a number of breathtaking sights. The Barton Hills National Nature reserve is dotted with wildflowers like orchids and hair violets among others. To witness nature in full bloom, April to July is the best time to visit. The butterflies pollinating the flowers, a crystal clear stream running along the foot of the valleys and the vibrant colours of the flowers make the whole reserve look like an illustration from a children’s fairytale.
Whipsnade Zoo- The largest zoo in the UK, Whipsnade Zoo is managed by a non-profit organisation that is committed to preserving endangered species around the world. Divided into more than 12 zones, the zoo has Asian elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, sea lions, and more. While the sea lions put up a show for visitors, the other experiences at the zoo include the chance to get close to the rhinos and giraffes. Kids with families find a lot to keep them entertained here.
What To Eat?
If the regular fare of fish and chips is too passe for you, Luton has a few good places that serve finger-licking Italian. Given the immigrant population of the UK, kebabs and doner grills are favoured by people too. You can find the best of every world in Luton, so don't be surprised if you see a platter of stew and meat alongside tandoori naan.
