Fascinating History of Naggar Castle

Naggar was the royal state of Kullu and its capital city for many years. The castle has been fixed without metal nails, including the walls, the doors, and the windows. The walls have an alternate layer of wooden beams followed by proportionate stone. The stones used for constructing the castle were from Gharhdhedk of Baragarh overlooking the Beas River. Following the orders of Raja Sidh Singh, the labourers formed a human chain across the Beas River. This way, they connected the banks from one end to the other and manually carried the stones.

The castle was the royal residence of the king and state headquarters until the 17th century when Raja Jagat Singh shifted the capital to Sultanpur, now called Kullu. Despite shifting the capital, subsequent rulers continued to use the castle as a summer palace until the arrival of the British, who took over Kangra and Kullu in 1846.

The first Assistant Commissioner bought the castle from the king, and he transformed it into European decor. After its renovation, a fireplace, staircase, and chimney were added. Naggar Castle emerged as an unusual amalgamation of the original architecture and a seat from the English country. He then sold the castle to the government when it was utilised as a courthouse.

In 1947, when the British departed from India, the court-based activity stopped, but it remained open for tourists. It was transformed into a civil rest house.

Naggar Castle is an unusual medieval mansion with a small historical temple in the courtyard, Jagati Patt, revered as the Kullu Gods’ judgement seat. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation took over Naggar Castle in 1978.
