The golden period of Nellore is said to be till the 13th century AD when the Chola dynasty ruled, and with the decline of the dynasty, the golden period also ended. In the 18th century, the British took over and this became a part of British Madras presidency. The city is instrumental to the creation of the state of Andhra Pradesh and the renowned revolutionary Potti Sri Ramalu who was a resident of Nellore laid down his life for the cause.
