My 18 year old and our cat travelled from Massachusetts to Portland Oregon this summer and stayed at least 10 different motels. All of them were less than 100$ a night. All of them had problems. None of them were like home. It's the nature of motels in that price range. There are many things out of motel managers' control -- such as what people do in their rooms (fight, smoke, bring bugs in their luggage, etc). The important thing is how motel staff respond. The Unicorn Inn has cameras on every public inch of its property. They take safety seriously. The motel is in a section of Portland that is affected by homelessness, but it is also the epicenter of truly terrific and authentic Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese (try Kenny's Noodles) food. Not only were the staff responsive to what we needed (moving us to a more comfortable room when it turned out we had to stay longer because our friend got sick and we couldn't stay with her), but other people staying were kind. Highly recommend if you want to feel safe and welcomed.
5 stars for exceeding my expectations of motels in general. Spacious room with table, chairs, fridge, and microwave. Personalized, friendly, and helpful service, esp. from Dawn and Ken (who helped address a fridge issue and later checked in on us about it to ensure we were good). Can't beat the location if you're on an Asian Foodie Adventure like we were. :) We're very happy with our decision to stay here.
