Port Blair is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It has a famous cellular jail where many freedom fighters were imprisoned during the British rule. These prisoners were kept in inhuman conditions with torture and tormenting being regular practice. This practice was exercised to break them down or to kill them as an exemplary punishment. Today Port Blair is a beautiful place where many visitors arrive in large number to explore the islands around it. Earlier sometime this town was occupied by the Japanese, during World War II. Later, it was recaptured by the British. One can reach Port Blair either by sea or by flight. The name of the airport here is Veer Savarkar International Airport. Historically Marco Polo, the famous traveller and scholar, once visited this island. In 1959 there was a fierce battle between the Andamanese and the British for the occupancy rights over this place. In this fierce battle, many lives were lost. The Andaman Islands were notorious because here the prisoners were kept by the British in the dark cells. This place was known as Kala Pani.
