The Wessex Hotel is a spacious and well-managed establishment, part of a reliable chain that guarantees a consistent level of quality – so you know what to expect, and I was certainly pleased. The breakfast team was particularly friendly, as were the reception staff. The breakfast buffet offered a typical range from continental to full English (though I did miss having porridge!), and the overall quality of the food was excellent. However, the standout feature of the hotel is undoubtedly its location: you are right next to Winchester Cathedral – visible from the breakfast room windows – which creates a wonderful atmosphere and places you right in the heart of the city, within walking distance of all the attractions and shops you might need. I highly recommend taking a leisurely evening stroll to the water meadows, just a ten-minute walk behind Winchester College. For a great pub experience, I felt well looked after at The Roof on the Bridge, which is also nearby. If I return to Winchester, the Wessex Hotel will definitely be my preferred place to stay.

A fantastic location, right in the heart of the city and within walking distance of everything. There are plenty of pubs nearby, and it’s just a short stroll to the market on the High Street. Spotlessly clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The staff were friendly and eager to help. The shower was powerful, conveniently situated over the bath. Surprisingly quiet at night, despite our room being above the car park and overlooking the cathedral. Some rooms offer a lovely view of the cathedral. The on-site bar is open late. A few rooms come with a mini fridge.
