Trekking in Sikkim: A Guide to the Best Mountain Trails

Sikkim, the scenic hill station nested in the eastern Himalayas, is a gateway to some of the most stunning treks in India. Enthusiastic trekkers make it a point to experience at least one journey that starts in Sikkim to witness the rugged terrain, high-altitude passes, and pristine natural beauty. If you are planning trekking in future, you would never want to miss the following spots:

  1. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

If you want to witness the magnificence of the third highest peak in the world up close, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a challenge you should consider taking. Starting from Yuksom, a tiny village in West Sikkim, this moderate to difficult trek will take you on a journey where majestic mountains surround you as you take in the breath-taking views of the Rathong River, rest at low-lying campsites, and watch as the Lepcha herds beautiful yaks.

Fields full of rhododendrons, orchids, and pines are ready to welcome you. Remember, the best time to take on this challenge is from March to May and September to November.

  1. Sandakphu Trek

Imagine waking up each morning to the twin views of some of the highest peaks in the world. On the Sandakphu Trek, you can witness the snowy white Everest on the one hand and the majestic Kanchenjunga on the other, along with gorgeous Lhotse and Makalu.

The trek passes through the top sightseeing in Sikkim – the Singalila National Park. If you are lucky, you might glimpse the endangered Red Panda. The best time to commence the trek is from March to May and October to December. Since Sandakphu is a culminating point of several treks, you can meet fellow trekkers from around the world.

  1. Goecha La Trek

The Goecha-la Trek takes place through Singalila Ridge. It starts from the sprawling tea plantations of Darjeeling and ends in Sikkim. From the summit, you will be able to see four of the four highest peaks – Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu.

This unique trek passes through two national parks – Singalila National Park and Kanchenjunga National Park. It is considered best for experienced and expert trekkers as it is moderately difficult and can be quite tough. You will reach a maximum altitude of 16,404 feet, and the best time to visit is between March to May and September to November.

  1. Dzongri Trek

This six-day trek from Yuksom to Dzongri is an excellent choice for those hikers who want to witness the splendour of Kanchenjunga. Starting from the famous village of Yuksom, you enter the Kanchenjunga National Park. As you tread through the lush jungle, you will reach the picturesque village of Tsokha.

From there, the trek gradually ascends, crossing forests and meadows until you reach Dzongri, where the temperature drops significantly. During the season, snow is common, and the entire region, including Dzongri, is covered in snow. It is an easy to moderate difficulty trek that newbies can take from March to May and September to November if they want to challenge themselves and be rewarded with stunning sights.

  1. Barsey Rhododendron Trek

The Barsey Rhododendron trek takes you through the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim, home to 13 different rhododendron species. The slopes of the hills are covered with various rhododendron species such as Arboretum, Falconeri, Barbatum, and more, making it a haven for nature lovers and bird watchers.

The top sightseeing in this trek offers panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range against the rich red, yellow, and pink hues of the blooming rhododendrons in spring. It is an easy trek that first-timers can attempt during the same months mentioned above who want to experience the thrill of trekking.
