More About Tsomoriri

Tso Moriri is located in the South-eastern part of Leh in Eastern Ladakh. It is around 240 kilometres from Jammu and is considered one of the most popular lakes in the country. The lake is at a high altitude of 4,522 meters and is one of the highest altitude lakes in the country. The Tso Moriri lake is fed by snowmelt from the mountains nearby, and the springs and most of the water enters from the southwest and north.

The serene blue waters reflect the sunlight during the day to give it an almost oasis-like feel. The lake is known for its crystal-clear water which makes it glisten during the day. The lake is characteristic of the Ladakhi region and has been featured in many documentaries about the region.

The lake has a military establishment on its eastern bank, and up until the year 1959, it was a source of salt for the people living around the region. The water has turned brackish off late, and it has become a tourist destination with many Tso Moriri tour packages available.

Places to See in Tso Moriri

Apart from the lake itself, the 400-year old Korzok monastery is another popular tourist spot, with Tibetan monks inhabiting it. You’ll be able to meditate atop one of the highest monasteries in the world and enjoy a discourse from the monks during their prayers. The Tso Moriri tour also sees a lot of tourists from around the world as well as Buddhist pilgrims, among others.

Best time to Visit Tsomoriri

The high-altitude lake region is best visited during May and September when it is in liquid form. During the winter months, the lake freezes up, and the region also becomes uninhabitable owing to the extremely low weather.

Such pleasant weather makes it a great place to enjoy the two-day long Korzok Gustor festival, which takes place in the Tibetan calendar’s sixth month. There are plenty of Changpa tourists and nomads who frequent this place during this period, and it is a great experience interacting with them and getting to know their culture and history, firsthand.

The traditional symbol of the festival is to celebrate the victory of good over evil as it pays tribute to the assassination of an evil king by a pious Buddhist monk. At the end of the dispersal, there is a traditional dance known as the “Storm” which concludes a ceremony known as the “Argham”.

There are many accommodation options in Leh where you’ll be able to stay for a few days and take in the views of the Himalayas. There is also a PWD guest house available near the lake which can be booked well in advance.
