Diskit – The Heart of Nubra Valley

Diskit is the administrative center of Nubra Valley, located at the height of over 2000 meters. Located next to the Shyok valley desert, this town offers a spectacular view of the surrounding Leh valley with snow-capped mountains. A day’s walk will take you to Somoor on the way to Panamik where you can smell a typical Ladakhi meal being traditionally cooked on black stoves.

In Diskit, you can also visit the 14th-century Diskit monastery, the largest and oldest Buddhist monastery in the valley.

Panamik – The Last Indian Frontier

Panamik is the last hamlet and settlement in India before the Tibetan border. Known for its natural hot springs, Panamik is also home to the 250-year-old Ensa Gompa a monastery perched high on the rocky valley and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding snowy mountains.

Hunder Sand Dunes – Travel the Silk Route

Located at the height of over 4000 meters, the Hundar Sand Dunes appears like an oasis within a cold desert and has such mesmerizing beauty that cannot be described with mere words! Apart from its stunning surrounding landscape, these dunes are home to the double-humped Bactrian camels that were once a transportation mode for carrying goods across the Silk Route. You must go for the popular Camel Safari ride on these Bactrian camels. Other places of interest in the Hunder dunes is the Yarab Tso lake (known as the hidden lake) and the Samstanling monastery.

Best Time to Visit Nubra Valley

While Nubra valley experiences cold climate throughout the years, the best time to visit this valley is in the autumn months of July to September when you can experience its natural landscape at its best. Summer in Nubra valley lasts from March to May and also offers a pleasant climate. The winter season in Nubra valley lasts from November to February and has very harsh weather with temperatures falling as low as -4 degrees centigrade.

Things to Do in Nubra Valley

Are you the type of traveler inclined to go on the Nubra Valley trek? If yes, then you must go on the 15 to 20-minute trek to the holy and pristine Yarab Tso lake located in Sumur. Known as the hidden lake, this lake with crystal clear waters is a treat to experience for a sense of calmness and to relish the fresh mountain air.

Another close spot which should not be amiss in your Nubra Valley itinerary is the 32-meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha overlooking the Shyok river. Closer to the Diskit monastery, this monument was built recently in the year 2010. The statue weighed 8 kilograms of donated gold and was built to promote world peace!

If experiencing the adrenaline rush and enjoying adventure-filled activity is your passion, then a drive to Khardung La should be included in your Nubra tour package. Claimed to be the world’s highest pass accessible by motor cars, the Khardung La Pass is located over 5600 meters above sea level and is flanked along with prayer flags and has a small shrine along the road.

For a delightful foodie traveler, there is no escaping some quality vegetarian Baltistani cuisine at Balti kitchen located along the Hundar-Turtuk border road in Nubra valley. Some of the popular dishes that you can relish while you trip along the Nubra Valley include the Kisir (made of buckwheat) served with Moskot (a walnut puree made with onion and chilies). You can also enjoy some seasonal mulberry juice served in June to July.

How to Reach Nubra Valley

The fastest way to reach Nubra valley is by domestic flight with the nearest airport being the Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport located in Leh. The airport is at a distance of around 120 kilometers from the valley, which can be traversed by bus or private taxi. If you are traveling by train, the nearest railway station to Nubra Valley is the Jammu Tawi station located around 370 kilometers away from the valley.

Road travel is the most convenient way of reaching Nubra valley through the Leh national highway, followed by the Khardung La pass road. Nubra valley is well-connected by road to nearby places like Delhi, Manali, and Leh.
