About Kalimpong:

Kalimpong is an old town which was under the rule of Sikkimese and Bhutanese rulers. The etymology of the place has many different interpretations, with one claiming that the word means a place where tribesmen meet and organize traditional games. Another view is that the word was derived from Bhutan while another dispute is that it is the name of a fibrous plant found in this region.

Kalimpong used to be ruled by the Sikkimese rulers until the 18th Century and was then taken over by the Bhutanese before the British Raj took over and merged it with West Bengal. The town is found on a ridge that connects two valleys – Durpin and Deolo Hill. The famous River Teesta also flows through the city, providing it with the necessary sustenance it needs. There are certain vantage points that adorn Kalimpong including the majestic views of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain peak.
