With no dearth of destinations, a trip to Sikkim is enjoyed equally by people of all age groups and tastes. Best time to visit Sikkim Spring (March to May): Spring time in Sikkim is beautiful. It lets you enjoy all the aspects of Sikkim in their best ways. The weather remains pleasant. Temperature doesn’t go beyond 22 C. It is certainly the best time to visit Sikkim. Monsoon (June – August): This season is marred by landslides, slushy roads and fog. The temperature hovers around 22 C. It is advised not to travel to Sikkim during this period. Autumn (September – November): Due to Sikkim’s temperate conditions and with trees shedding their leaves, this is one of the most beautiful seasons. The temperature remains between 22 C to 10 C. Winter (December – February): Winters in Sikkim are quite cold, but at the same time equally beautiful and quaint. The clear blue skies and white snow combine to make a splendid sight. By Air: Bagdogra in West Bengal is the nearest airport from Sikkim. It is 120 km from Sikkim and well connected with flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. By Train: New Jalpaiguri is the nearest railway station from Sikkim. It is located at a distance of 117 km. Trains from Delhi and Kolkata are connected to this railway station. By Road: NH31 connects Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital to other parts of the country through Siliguri, and also to other parts of the state.
Foreigners require a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim. Permits for protected areas like Nathula Pass, Yumthang, Gurudongmar Lake etc are needed to be availed from Police Check Posts and Tourism Department by both Indian and International tourists.
  • Tsomgo Lake: Tsomgo is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of 3753 m. It is azure Blue in spring and gets completely frozen in winters, making it a magnificent sight to behold, all around the year. It is only 40 km from Gangtok.
  • Gurudongmar Lake: Located at a height of 5430 m, Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest fresh water lakes in the world. It is only 5 km from the Chinese border, and hence a protected permit area. It is considered holy by the Buddhist community.
  • Kanchenjunga:The third highest mountain peak in the world needs no introduction. Its breathtakingly beautiful and grand views can be seen from Tashi view point. The view is best seen at either dawn or dust.
  • Mt. Katao: Mt. Katao is the highest military base in Sikkim. Located near Lachung, it offers several magnificent views of the Himalayas. Even the drive to this destination, passing by several peaks and waterfalls, is totally enthralling.
  • Tsuk La Kang Monastery:The Tsuk La Kang Monastery belonged to the exiled royal family of Sikkim when it was a separate country.
  • Ganesh Tok: The sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha is situated atop a 6500 feet high hill and offers magnificent views of Gangtok. If luckily you go on a less cloudy day, then you might also catch a glimpse of Mt. Kanchenjunga.
  • Cholamu Lake: At an astounding 5577 m, Cholamu Lake is the highest lake in India and 14th highest in the world. Tourists need to take special permission from army, Sikkim administration and police to venture near it since it is situated only 6 km from China’s border.
  • Rabdentse Ruins: Located 107 km from Gangtok, Rabdentse ruins tell the stories of glory and splendour of the erstwhile Sikkim capital that was established in the year 1670.
  • Go on a monastery tour.
