Also called ‘The Valley of Flowers’, Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim is nothing less than a Mini Paradise in Eastern Himalayas. Being situated at a high altitude of 3564 m, the beautiful valleys often witnesses snow, especially during winter months when the valley is often out of bounds due to incessant snowfall. The valley gets laid with a wide variety of Rhododendrons during spring, adding different hues of the spectrum to the already ethereally beautiful valley. It is only 26 km ahead of the town of Lachung.

How To Reach Yumthang Valley

By Air

The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. From there you need to arrive in Gangtok which is 126 km via NH31 and NH31A. From Gangtok you need to proceed further to Lachung (103 km) from where Yumthang Valley is only 26 km.

By Rail

The  New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal is the nearest railway station to Yumthang Valley. From New Jalpaiguri, you first need to arrive in Gangtok which is 119 km away via NH31 and then travel further to Lachung which is only 103 km from Gangtok. From Lachung, Yumthang Valley is located at a distance of 26 km.

By Road

Lachung is the nearest township to Yumthang Valley. It is only at a distance of 26 km from here. Local taxis run between Gangtok- Lachung- Yumthang.

Yumthang Valley Weather

Spring/Summer (March to May)

Summer start in the valley by the later half of March and continues till late May/ early June. The maximum recorded temperature in during these months is 20C.

Monsoon (June to September)

Monsoon starts in June and lasts till September end or early September. The valley sees incessant rainfall during monsoon months.

Autumn (October to November)

October witnesses the start of autumn in Yumthang Valley. The maximum recorded temperature during this season is 16.5 C.

Winter (December to February)

Winters are extremely cold in Yumthang valley with temperature consistently remaining below 0 C. The valley is often closed in winters due to heavy snowfall.

Best Time to Visit Yumthang Valley

March to May

The months of March, April and May are the best months to visit Yumthang Valley. The weather is not very cold as the temperature is not that low. Moreover, travellers get to witness the best part of the valley for which it is famous- the bloom of colourful Rhododendrons and other flowers.

Yumthang Valley Hotels

Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar is one of the highest and most beautiful lakes in India. Located at a height of 5425 m, Gurudongmar Lake is 138 km from Yumthang Valley. It remains frozen during most time of the year. Even when the entire lake gets frozen, a particular portion never freezes due to Guru Padmasambhava’s blessing.  Its water is considered holy and visitors often collect it to take it back with them.

Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

The Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary is located in Yumthang Valley, near Lachung in the North Sikkim district of the state. It is popular for it 40 species of Rhododendrons and several species of Himalayan birds.
