About New Town - Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a city full of beautiful architecture and lovely tourist spots. It has been high on the list of places to visit since medieval times! While in the old days, people used to come to Edinburgh because it was a hub of commerce and a center of culture, today people visit to get a taste of the historic flavor the city is steeped in.

With Georgian townhouses and beautiful avenues, the New Town in Edinburgh is a beautifully planned part of the city, unlike the much older Old Town. Built between the 1760s and the 1830s, the new town is host to several chic restaurants and cafes, elegant buildings, and loads of open spaces (unlike the cramped old town).

It is not only the old town that holds exciting tourist spots. There are many in the new town which reel in hundreds of visitors every year!

The Melville Monument

A gigantic monument in the New Town of Edinburgh, this monument is an important part of the New Town. Only a few minutes away from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, this attraction is not as well known as the others in the city but holds just as much importance in the historical make-up of Edinburgh.

The Scott Monument

A looming structure, the monument pays homage to Sir Walter Scott, one of the best-known writers from Scotland and is popular among tourists as it is next to Princes Street Gardens, which are also a great location to add to your itinerary.

Princes Street Farmer’s Market

The Princes Street Farmer’s Market is a must-visit sport to find some exciting souvenirs and trinkets to take back with yourself. This is a more popular market, so you can often find great deals and small pop-up cafes in the area.

How to reach?

It is very easy to reach the New Town via flights. Edinburgh Airport connects the historic city to various international and domestic locations like Paris, Doha, Budapest, London, Belfast, and Dublin. You can take a cab from the airport to Princes Street in the middle of the new town in about 30 minutes as the distance between the locations is only 14 kilometers! You can also conveniently take a train to Edinburgh Waverley Station, from where both the New Town and the Old Town are walking distance. The National Express and Megabus services will also leave you to the bus stop in the new town, making it easy to explore the city. To commute within the new town, you can conveniently use the tramway which runs through the city. Visitors can also opt to take a local bus or taxi service for a smooth ride.

What to Eat?

There are many exciting places in the city where you can get a taste of authentic Scottish Cuisine in Edinburgh. Go to The Wee House for pork steak and oysters, Wildfire for the Angus beef steak and roast duck, and Cafe St Honore for the Scottish salmon and roe deer cottage pie.
